Oh Owen!

OH OWEN!

What, you don't believe me?
OK, LOOK:

Stroked

I don't really need to say how awesome this has the potential to be.
It's pretty hit and miss, as most tribute albums are, but, who cares.
Can you believe it's been ten years since this release?
Can you remember how important this album was?
Can you?

Then download THIS.

My favourites are the Peter, Bjorn & John cover of Is This It; Owen Pallet's amazing string construction of Hard To Explain & Real Estate's rendition of Barely Legal.

New @tlas S0und.

Coxy's new album is out. It's called P@rallax. Enjoy it. I'm pretty certain it's good.

TAKE IT

Thank you for returning.

When Planes Mistaken For Stars (one of my all time favourite bands) called it quits in 2008 I was gutted - literally inconsolable. When Gared O’Donnell, the vocalist and guitarist of PMFS announced his solo project Hawks and Doves, and released his debut 7” single ‘Hush Money’, it seemed like there was hope. That was early 2009 and nothing had been heard from Hawks and Doves since. One single and an excellent cover of Springsteens ‘I’m On Fire’ cannot keep a rock n roll fan satisfied for very long. Other members from PMFS went on to form Git Some, and put out an album which was cool, but never reached the stunning heights of PMFS. I was very sad for a long time. A few days ago I found out that Hawks and Doves were back with a full length album. The word is elated.

Something needs to be said about Hawks and Doves. When PMFS split O’Donnell was forced to move into his mother’s basement with nothing but his many demons - rock bottom for a man who spent over a decade on the road with his band. Hawks and Doves was born out of this situation.

Following the progression of the later PMFS records, the approach of the new record is all brooding sombre verses leading into loud driving choruses which fashion mental images of man and guitar thrashing about on a small and dimly lit stage. O’Donnell has clearly continued his diet of cheap whisky and razor blades which give him one of the most distinct, disturbing and haunting voices in modern rock n roll. I missed this terribly.

It’s always so great when a band or artist manages to return from near obscurity with renewed fire, newly acquired humility, and a great record.

Daytripping with Mr. Indian

Wow. That's pretty much all I can say. The Indian-bro really delivers on this daytripping trotter session.
It really is just wow. Like, wow.

YOU REALLY MUST TAKE THIS

Also, if you have never heard of Neon Indian (i'm lazy, so, wiki it is) or his Psychic Chasms well, fuck, you better take it:
HERE IT IS.

He@vy Hawaii

I really appreciate music that feels like you could climb inside, inside it's atmosphere, like a little mini-narnia - infinitely full of space and tiny discoveries. Or big ones. Like James McAvoy's yummytummyTumnus.
I preach reverb, from a synthetic pulpit - but for good godamn reason, cos even a touch just, well, gives a melody space to breathe.
He@vy Hawa11 were trounced into my life by one of my obvious taste-makers, my deplorable guitarist, Colin von Berg. On this latest release, they've cleaned up a couple of their DEMOS in an infinitely minuscule, but pleasing manner - their surf pop rings out true, slow, chiming and SPEKTOR-y as fuck, charming, soft-hearted, chunky & lo-fi-ish, draped with soft neon glow like a carnival - a carnival filled with hidden spooky delights, exploding slowly, with coruscating joy:
There is an undercurrent to their seemingly naive, cutesy, playful sound. Like The Unicorns; there is a darkness underlying these little tales. Albeit with HH the sound is smaller, compacted, less overblown - little packages, snowglobes of joy, sparkly, nostalgic and fragile - a little dash of 50s60s surfiness, a Beach Boys, but crapper.

If I haven't convinced you, well, you're a fucktard and you don't deserve to hear them.

Taste this:

New Shady Lane Mix.

This mix probably requires headphones, darkness and a not so sunny disposition.

6AM, Dusk, 10PM - Shady Lane Mix

Lorelle Meets The Obsolete!

The name of this band is what first caught my attention. It just sounded really weird and interesting. Turns out, that is exactly what the band is like. It's two folks from Mexico making noisy, droney, psychedelic-shoegaze-rock. After reading that description you will either have been put off or intrigued to the point that all further description is unnecessary. So, if you're still reading, check them out.

Lorelle Meets The Obsolete - This Plain City

This band is called D0M. They are great.

I'mma gonna wait til Iain can drop the goods on this thar band. But, I can tell you, I listened to one of their new tracks, like, right now and it's Great. I know it's Great, because it sounds Great.

Here's a soundcloud link to help you make the decision real quick:

And HERE, yes RIGHT HERE, you can DL the VIBEZ, yo.

I'm assuming you know how to work this. Clicksels on the SLOWER DL link. Peace, Homies. It's been TOO long.

There Is A Way!

What has 12 legs, roams the central Scottish lowlands and is named after a famous Canadian ufologist?

DANANANANANANANANANANANAykroyd!!!

After creating my favourite 15 seconds in indie of 2008 (One after one), and a great debut album (Hey Everyone), they have returned with their second full length ‘There Is A Way’. While not a huge departure in terms of sound they have raised their game in every aspect. The songs are more energetic and frenetic and there are melodies that will get you throwing all the post-hardcore vocalist poses and screaming into your fists. The band seem to have established their sound nicely and are supremely confident in what they are doing and it works so well. Check out this song for a taster.

Wonky Beats!

This is a few months old now but if you have not yet heard it then now is the perfect time. Darwin Deez, New York's uber hip indie-popper put together this little 'mixtape' and put it up for free download as a special treat. Here's where things get interesting... This 'mixtape' is comprised entirely of samples from the 1971 movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and features Darwin Deez himself rapping over the music. He also drafted in friends like Dev Hynes, KOOL AD from Das Racist and Chiddy Bang to help him on his hip hop escapade.

My favourite description of this record is this - "A Super Fun Non-Hip Hop Hip Hop Wonkavision Concept Record". That pretty much sums it up. This will not change your life, but it is a lot of fun and I really enjoy his concept of being creative through self imposed constraints.

TAKE IT!

Warmth from Canada

What?! You think there is not enough French horn in rock music?
Me too!
How do you feel about those country-folk troubadour types who write songs about growing up, walking the streets of their hometown, friends and lost love?
Really?! I love them too!
I agree, occasional quirky lyrical themes totally add to the charm of a song.
Hey, have you heard Dan M@ngan? I think you’d really like him. He’s from a place called Smithers in British Columbia. His sophomore album from 2009, called “Nice, Nice, Very Nice”, is entirely lovely and wonderful and his forthcoming album “O’ Fortune” is due to be released soon.
Listen to these. They’re my favourites. Tell me what you think.

Oh! What do you think of funny videos inspired my movies and fashion from the 80s? Yeah, I love them too. Check this out, it’s fun.

J Mass-kiss goes solo!

So, J M@scis, singer/guitarist from indie rock great Dinosaur Jr, has just released his first official solo album "Several Shades Of Why". So often, when front men do solo records, they end up sounding just like their original band and it all seems a bit pointless. Fortunately this is not the case here. Since reforming Dinosaur Jr. in 2005 JM has put out 2 pretty awesome records of fuzzy noisy pop-rock in the same vein as their output during the 80s and 90s. With his solo effort he has gone the acoustic route and stuck with the winning formula of great melodies, subtle instrumentation and superb song writing. It's undeniably JM with his distinctive vocals and excellent guitar playing yet there is enough here to set this apart from his work with Dinosaur Jr.

It makes me very happy to see JM still putting out such great music after all these years and, along with 90s contemporaries such as Pavement, Sebadoh and The Posies, showing that good old fashioned indie rock is still relevant.

J Masskiss - Not Enough

Mmmhhhhh...

Sometimes I find a band, or even just a song, which changes everything for me. It’s been a while since I found such a band or song but here it is now. The He@d and The He@rt, emerging from the current Seattle folk explosion, are a truly special prospect. Comparisons may be drawn to their Sub Pop label mates Fleet Foxes, with their acoustic folk stylings, harmonised vocals, prominent percussion elements and great song writing. Their self titled debut was released a few months ago and all signs indicate that they are going to make big waves in the near future.
Check out the lead single from the album, as well as a radio performance of the same song, below.

God bless Seattle and Sub Pop records for consistently bringing us such great music.
